the problem seems to have gone away, though I haven't been experimenting so
much lately and changing drives. The most unusual gibberish comes up
instead of the drive indentity.

Hi Beth,

Glad to know that I'm not unique in experiencing this. Each of my
systems has had two removable drawers, both set to master on
primary/secondary controllers, for quite a few years, and this is the
first time this has ever occurred.

Like in your case I had been in Windows immediately prior to the
occurrence, and it had discovered some hardware changes, related to a
32MB AGP videocard, & USB 2.0 PCI card only, but the 4.3 GB drive it
lives on has only been mounted solo - BIOS permanently set to
auto-detect drives - I just slide the power switch on Maxtor-drawer to
off when using it. Again due 99+% OS/2-eCS usage probably explains why I
haven't encountered it before. It was a bit scary - I have about a dozen
bootable partitions on it.
