From:

INNOVATIVE MODULAR DESIGN AND ENERGY STAR COMPLIANT SYSTEM: Adaptable to
your changing needs:
o Ultrabay II accepts diskette drive (FDD), CD, DVD, second HDD, second
battery, ThinkPad Proven(R)(4) VST Zip 100
o Full docking solutions with SelectaBase 770, PC Card Enabler, and
SelectaDock
So it's an Ultrabay II (not 2000) that we are dealing with.
And From:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=ibm&lndocid=LWIK-3TQHC7
THINKPAD ULTRABAY II: The ThinkPad UltraBay II, also standard with the
system, is an intelligent bay that switches its pinout signals to allow
the installation of standard and optional features in what would
normally be just the FDD bay.
UltraBay II accommodates:
o Second Li-Ion battery
o Second HDD
o An FDD or CD-ROM or a DVD drive or ZIP drive
o The 760 family hard disk drive options if the ThinkPad 770 Second HDD
adapter option is used
The installation of a second hard drive in the UltraBay II requires the
ThinkPad 770 Second HDD Adapter optional feature.
So this confirms what you need is the "ThinkPad 770 Second HDD Adapter"
option (Part) number 11J8836. - Which you have ! The harddisk in it's
normal "caddy" should fit into this part. Are you trying to fit a bare
drive into this ??
The concept is that you can swop the drive between systems, hence it
must be in the caddy that fits into this family of thinkpads (TP 760 /
TP770).
Can you take out the primary drive in its tray and fit it into the
ultrabay adapter ? If so it's "working as designed". If you want to use
an OEM drive, you will need the same tray/caddy as you would need if you
were using it to replace the primary HD in the system.
This and other relevant disk drive options are listed at:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=ibm&lndocid=TJEK-3QGU6U
Hope this all helps,
Cheers/2
Ed.
