More trivia:

One of the last hangmen in the UK was Albert Pierpoint.  He was an
acquaintance of my mother's, and kept a pub in Oldham.  His family also
kept, I believe, the Old Silk Mill pub in Derby.

FWIW - "Derby", whether referring to the town, its shire, the
horse race or the suburb of Liverpool (West Derby) is _ALWAYS_ pronounced
"Darby".
