-------PRINTERS ---------------------------------------------------- Area F.Hrdsft.Tech: Computer technical conference From: Tom Walker To: Phil Marlowe Feb 06, 03 07:21:14 Subject: Refilling Laser Toner ---------------------------------------------------- > the old Dot Matrix. At least > the Quality Models like my Epson LQ 870, just > keep on running. Just like the Eveready Battery > Bunny!! :-) :-) === Hey, that's the metaphor I used about some old OKIs just the other day! [g] Solid machines. Close to 20 years old and still running daily. > And the comment about the printed page having a > short life is also very true. === I was referring there to bulletins and other information put out by a volunteer group I help out. Probably a lot of that stuff never even gets read. But it's gotta be put out for those who do need to be informed. -> Trouble is the tractor type paper is getting more -> and more expensive as less and less people use -> it. Which is why I'm now becoming interested in -> the lasers, which I understand uses standard xerox -> type paper. > They do use Standard Copier paper. I just picked > up two Reams of Georgia Pacific Copier paper from > Wal-Mart for $2.87 per ream. And I have seen > specials on 10 ream boxes at Office supply stores > in the region of $16.00 === That's what I've seen as well -- those kind of prices. And that's the attraction. Especially for the volunteer group, who are low budget but who have to churn out quite a bit of paper. For some reason, plain paper prices seem to be going down, if I am not mistaken? > In the early days of Laser Printers they were a > little picky aobut the paper. But most anything > works now days. === Hmm. could be a problem then. What I'm thinking about is the possibility of replacing the old dot-matrix machines with old lasers, offered as a donation to the volunteer group. I think they're old HPs. > The only hooker is the toner cartridges. CHECK > first on the cost of the replacements before > buying any laser. But even so it is the Cheapest > per copy copy there is now days. === So I understand. -> I hesitate making the switch because now that I'm -> set up with dot matrix repair manuals, and have -> more or less have become familiar with the dot -> matrix mechanisms, I just wonder what hassles the -> lasers have in store. > I don't want to find out. But in the business > world the name brands have provem phenominialy > trouble free. === I'm thinking of paper jams, that sort of thing. > The only thing that I recall is that periodic > Cleaning extends the time in between troubles. === That's one of things I do with the dot matrix machines at the volunteer group. Unfortunately I don't have the time available to do a lot more cleaning and maintenance if the switchover is made to laser and the lasers end up requiring a lot more time. --- Maximus/2 3.01* Origin: Juxtaposition BBS, Telnet:juxtaposition.dynip.com (1:167/133) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 167/133 379/1 633/267 |
