This reminds me of a situation I encountered some years back...
I had an apartment, and had been helping the guy downstairs do some wiring
when he was finishing the basement. Nothing unusual, just lights, and a
few outlets.
At a point after that, we went out and got a couple of window A/C units,
and I had to change the one outlet from 220 to 110. After running these for
a short time, he got *very* irate at me, and I couldn't understand why. It
seems that both of our electric bills took a big jump.
The guy thought I had done something in the breaker box to hook this stuff up
to his meter!
That place was wired a little strange, although there were two meters,
there was only one breaker box. It seems that the former occupant of the
upstairs apartment, his brother-in-law, since moved to Florida, had done a
bunch of the wiring in there, and that there was a significant amount of
stuff that was "cross-connected" accorting to the electrician that was called
in to straighten it out.
Unfortunately the guy blamed *me* for this, and our relations suffered from
that point... :-(
