Always was going to be the case. It's so old that I'm sure the Romans were
making the same arguments wrt (a) the Germans & (b) wrt expanding the
empire in general. Ditto the Persians, the British etc. It always leads to
overstretch & thus eventual defeat.

There is an old saying wrt "Any fool can start a war but noone ever
knows how it will end".
