Hello Thurston -

CA>> Was reading that IBM is dicontinuing it's optimization of
CA>> Linux to use the new Itanium chip from Intel.

--8<--cut

CA>> I normally could care less if one corp beats another corp
CA>> to a bloody pulp but this really left a bad taste in my
CA>> mouth.

TA> We shouldn't be too surprized that IBM has dropped
TA> developement of a OS (like OS2 8-( again.

True, they are developing a 'pattern' aren't they?

CA>> It annoys me to no end that RedHat has created
CA>> millionaires that didn't have to even write or pay for
CA>> what they are selling, then the 'Lindows' scam, and now
CA>> this.

CA>> Am I the only one that sees this whole opensource thing as
CA>> having a negative side to it that is growing faster than
CA>> the positive side? So-called opensource is rapidly
CA>> becoming an unpaid source of revenue for the already rich.

TA> You aren't alone by any means. I find it interesting that
TA> many linuxers often tend to be socialistic academics who
TA> often decry that competition is a quite normal attribute of
TA> our living condition; that also generally has a more
TA> positive than negative influence on our total well being.
TA> (My daughter often cites this ratiocination as my
TA> unqualified acceptence of Darwin's postulations)

"Survival of the fittest" does seem more popular with the
'fittest' than it has been with the less-than-fit and for good
reason I think. ;-)

TA> BTW The recent announced bankrupcy of Mandrake, and other
TA> linux concerns, demonstrates that the precepts of the real
TA> world are in full command in the opensoucre world.

There should have been a general clause in opensource that
those who profit from it must make some token contribution.
Free install CDs to anyone who requests them? Something.

TA> But none of the oddities will deter my trying some more
TA> distributions (until they get it right 8-)

My other concern is that one of the commercial versions will
become dominant and begin controlling the direction that development
moves in. Multimedia and more music file formats?

By observation it appears that they 'get it right', fiddle with
it till it's unstable, fix it, fiddle with it some more, etc.
With that as the primary methodology it will never be 'right'
it will always be "under development" and beta at best.
