I believe this is possible with Colt cap&ball sixguns. I seem to recall
reading that early Texas Rangers (Mexican War era) used to carry extra,
preloaded cylinders in their vest pockets. This enabled them to reload
on horseback.
During the Civil War, people just carried four or five extra Colts,
stuffed into saddle holsters, their belt, their boot-tops, etc. But
pre-Civil War, Colts were expensive & hard to come by.
