| subject: | Re: `Terrorists` x 2 |
From: "Dave Ings"
People have written entire books on this topic :-) so let me just say that
yes I find Britain to be a *far* more dynamic society than it was 25 years
ago. I also think Blair continued along the same general trajectory for
most of his time in power, despite his party affiliation. I don't live in
the UK, but I have UK family ties, hold a UK passport, and visit there
reasonably often.
However the point about the bottom line of higher prices is well taken.
Popular stereotypes about societies are sometimes at odds with reality. You
may recall I'm working in the US for a couple of years, and it's been
really interesting for me to contrast the stereotype of the world's
(supposedly) most laissez-faire economy with the bureaucratic reality that
I observe and hear about from my work buddies at lunch every day.
I'm constantly learning about stuff that would make the average Canadian
cringe, despite the stereotype about Canada being more statist in nature
than the US. Personal taxes are but one example I could list, it's *way*
simpler to file personal taxes in the Great White North.
