It's faster and cleaner to just remove plaster from the damaged area,
put 1x3 strapping on the ceiling (use a chalk line to shim it level),
then cover with 1/2" drywall.  You can save some hassles finishing
the ceiling-wall joint if you use cove mouldings around the perimeter.
Or, put in a  B I G  skylight  :)
