That would depend on what the gear was there to do. 

Dot matrix that had a 'quality' print setting would do
micro-moves to put dots between the other dots to smooth the
type. Even dust build up on the traverse bar for the head shows
up as lines within the printout. It's a more sensitive
arrangement than people think because it pounds the pins into
the paper. ;-)
