The spacecraft's computer is that old because of the quality assurance
testing.  They took many years of testing and fail-safe checking that system
to make sure of the safety measures before taking that craft to space.

Do you like the risk of putting a non-tested WindowsXP system with
Pentium IV computer installed on the new space mission?
