Have seen responses that NICAM is a companded audio system. Same here.

Yes. Generally, it's very good. However, pumping and video "trash"
have been known to add odd side-effects.

dBX type II is the consumer version for cassette/open reel
encode/decode units. For the most part, it worked well, and unlike
Dolby, (B&C) it isn't level dependent for accurate decoding. However,
a flat frequency response of the record/play chain is the main
requirement for good proformance.
