BL> Parliament represents the people, and Parliament writes the law BL> with the people's support. RS> And at times particular bits they write are found by the high RS> court to be unconstitutional. I said that in the second sentence, trying to dig yourself out, Rod? Why didn't you just go back and edit your first sentence? BL> Petrol isn't illegal, last I heard. RS> Petrol sniffing is tho. Paul was talkng about the `right' of a company to advertise a product because it was legal, and this was my point. Petrol is legal. You are wrong about petrol sniffing too... I know of no law against it. The law gets a bit strange at times. For instance, it is not illegal to smoke marijuana; only to be in possession, or in possession of implements used for smoking. If you stand around someone else's marijuana bonfire and sniff the smoke, then presumably this is not against the law. It reminds be on that old Chinese story where roast pigs were banned for eating, and the Chinese were always burning down the pigsty (with the pig in it). BL> Vallium and Prozac aren't illegal. RS> They arent available without prescription tho. Paul and I are only talking about advertising; not the product itself. Your comment is irrelevant to the discussion. BL> Or Dulux advertising spray cans of paint, complete with an ad BL> campaign of kids laughing and getting roots every time they BL> spray Geoff's car with meaningless scrawls? Paint isn't BL> illegal. RS> But incitement to commit a clearly illegal act is. But in the advertisemtn, Geoff wants them to deface his car. What's illegal about that? What about those car ads that show a car racing on a mountain road? Obviously illegal... except for the disclaimer in fine print "closed road in use". It certainly didn't change the message of the ad. BL> "Suicide is good for you" campaign, with big-titted ladies BL> yearning RS> Encouraging other people to commit suicide certainly isnt. Yes? What about heavy metal music? Advertising is never so direct, Rod. They just show people having a good time jumping under trains. BL> Or Ford promoting head-on srashes as the latest `in' thing when BL> sales drop off? RS> And its illegal to incite people to do that too. No, it's not, Rod. Advertising works in subtleties. This is what they pay them for; to get the lies across without breaking any law. Like the latest Adidas ad that links their shoes to the drug culture in sport and makes the whole thing very atttracitive, complete with a pump for the air-sole that is a dead ringer for a syringe. RS> Some forms of discrimination are perfectly legal too. Yes... and that's another of my red-rag subjects. It's illegal to discriminate against a pregnant woman who is clearly unable to perform most jobs as well as a non-pregnant moman or a man, and who costs more to employ, but age discrimination is actively encouraged, both in the forced retirement and an age cut-off of 35 in jobs. Bloody shocking; to discriminate against a man because he is 36. Regards, Bob ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 --- PQWK202* Origin: Precision Nonsense, Sydney (3:711/934.12) SEEN-BY: 711/934 @PATH: 711/934 |
