DA> The only reasonably accurate load for the .690" ball I found so far
DA> was with Pyrodex RS. I was given a load for .662" balls, but
DA> haven't gotten the mould for them yet. I bought some pre-cast .662
DA> balls but frittered them away before I found a decent load.
I'm looking for a load that I can load down for use at our clubs
slug matches. It dosen't take too much to knock down the plates
but the recovery time is important, as your shooting against the
clock or the guy next to you. My gun I use for the matches has
a true cyl bore, and that round ball load sounds just like what
I'm looking for.
DA> I've tried several powders with extrapolated loads that I am relucant
DA> to share for liability reasons. For a list of loads with .690" round
DA> balls, and .662" roundballs get Lyman Shotshell Manual #3. Since #4
DA> is out, they are selling old copies for only $5. Call Lyman at
DA> 1-800-22-LYMAN. Lyman #4 has loads for various slugs, but no
DA> roundballs.
Will do, I'll call them today.
DA> For other good roundball loads, get the "SLUG MANUAL" from Ballistic
DA> Products.

DA> Lyman makes 3 good 12 ga moulds of which I have two. I have the 525
DA> gr sabot slug mould, and the .690" round ball mould. Lyman also makes
DA> the .662" round ball mould which is next on my list. You can also buy
DA> .690" *swaged* roundballs from CVA (Connecticut Valley Arms), I bought
DA> some from a place that sold black powder supplies.
I use the 525 Lyman for deer hunting. It works great out of my
11/87 with the rifled choke tube. Out of the 14 deer our group
took this year, 5 were killed with the lyman slug using the 45
gr of Blue Dot. All were shot between 40 & 60 yards and none
needed more than one. That flat point has seems to have a lot
of "knock down" to it. That load has so much recoil that I
wont shoot it out of any of my pump guns.
DA> Ballistic products sells the .690" roundballs and the moulds, but
DA> overchages for both. They want $50 for the mould, plus handles.
DA> To buy Lyman moulds at a decent price, call Superior Reloading in
DA> Ohio. They want $35 for the mould, plus handles. but I can't find their
DA> number right now.
Thanks Dave, I appreciate you sharing that info. I'll call them and
check out the .690 mould availiability.
Take care
