Sounds a whole lot like navigating in Mexico. Not on the same scale of
course, but you're just as dead if you get lost and fly off into one of
them cumulo-granitous they have around every worthwhile city.
All flying at night is IFR in Mexico so sometimes if we were late
starting back we had a heck of a race with the sun.
At that time Mexico had the absolutely WORST nav-aids on this continent,
and I wished many times for something like our GPS systems. Fortunately
we had some Hell-for-loud AM Broadcast stations locally, and a pretty
good local VOR, but FINDING some of the remote strips down there was a
case of pretty good pilotage. Getting back was easy, just make the
compass say N and motor! Eventually, you HAD to find something you
recognized.
