It's bakelite indeed and got it's name after *my townsman Leo Hendrik 
Baekeland 1863-1944.

There is bakelite type A, type B abd Type C**, the latter being used in 
electric appliances. It's fully hardware controlled, hence doesn't need 
OS/2 drivers.
