BL> except for the disclaimer in fine print "closed road in use".

Oh, so we will ignore that will we, 'dont get a nasty smelly fact ruin a
perfectly good argument ?' |-)

BL> It certainly didn't change the message of the ad.

But does stop it being illegal. Funny that. Which might just be why its
there.

BL> Or how about Andrew's Dignified Funerals drumming up business with a
BL> "Suicide is good for you" campaign, with big-titted ladies yearning
BL> adoringly as handsome men in tight trousers jump off high places?
BL> Funerals are legal, aren't they?

RS> Encouraging other people to commit suicide certainly isnt.

BL> Yes?

Yes.

BL> What about heavy metal music?

Thats assumed to be an undesirable side effect.

BL> Advertising is never so direct, Rod.

Faking Bob.

BL> They just show people having a good time jumping under trains.

Well, if you cant quite grasp that you can at times do things which look
spectacular and you arent actually deliberately encouraging people to do
that...

Like the surfboard riding skydiver for example. Thats a deliberate
attempt to cut down the population explosion. Sure Bob.

BL> Or Ford promoting head-on srashes as the latest `in' thing when sales
BL> drop off?

RS> And its illegal to incite people to do that too.

BL> No, it's not, Rod.

Crap, it is indeed illegal to encourage people to engage in illegal
activity, like encouraging 11 year olds to sniff petrol for example.

You can fake away on other stuff which is in ads to actually attract
peoples attention and make them watch ads as much as you like Bob. Its
just faking.

BL> Advertising works in subtleties. This is what they pay them for; to
BL> get the lies across without breaking any law.

Well, if you cant grasp the subtle distinction between bending the
truth and say claiming your washing power washes whiter and encouraging
11 year olds to sniff petrol....

BL> Like the latest Adidas ad that links their shoes to the drug culture
BL> in sport

Not deliberately with the drug bit. If you cant grasp the distinction...

BL> and makes the whole thing very atttracitive, complete with a pump for
BL> the air-sole that is a dead ringer for a syringe.

Which is just a tad different to an ad which does nothing but encourage
11 year olds to sniff petrol.

BL> And what about the freedom to discriminate?

RS> Some forms of discrimination are perfectly legal too.

BL> Yes... and that's another of my red-rag subjects.

Have you tried cold showers ? Self flagellation ? Shooting yourself ?

BL> It's illegal to discriminate against a pregnant woman who is clearly
BL> unable to perform most jobs as well as a non-pregnant moman or a man,
BL> and who costs more to employ, but age discrimination is actively
BL> encouraged, both in the forced retirement and an age cut-off of 35 in
BL> jobs. Bloody shocking; to discriminate against a man because he is 36.

There is now some attempt to make that illegal too, but its getting
bogged down.
