  Thank you, Bill - that's what I needed to know.

  Unfortunately, my office is at the other end of the house from the
telephone line, and I would have to run another line back. I still
wake up screaming from the last time, sharing my space with 50-years
of dark and spiders.

  I see they have them for $19.95 at Jaycar, just up the street. It 
looks like you solved my problem (unlike that swine, Speed  :-)

  I went up and bought one, and the bugger doesn't work! The telephone 
works okay out of the modem port, but I get nothing out of the other 
one. Oh, well. I'll take it back and get another one. Bloody Taiwan.
