 Not just "newbies".  I have opened a semi this way to clear the weapon
 with the mag removed for many years.  I have done it so that the
 ejected round ends up in my hand and not groveling around on the dirt
 or cement floor.  Have never had a problem with primers or anything
 like that going bang.  You have, however, given me something to think
 about.
