Nearer the truth than you might at first think.

The Newfoundland economy is in dire straits so many have left the island
("gone down the road") and found jobs on the mainland.  The
Alberta oil patch is one destination; Toronto seems to be another.  I was
in Rona (local competitor to Home Despot) on the weekend and the two clerks
I approached were both from the rock.
