It may be one of the same reasons always that people prefer SCSI. PC
resources are scarce. ATA requires one interrupt for a maxiumum of two
devices, while on SCSI you get up to 15 devices per interrupt. Putting a
single ATA device in a system wastes an IRQ on a single device.
Another is that single ATA device introduces an unnecessary bus to the
system to compete with the others for control attention, instead of
added to a chain with a controller dedicated to mediating many devices
on a single bus.
Yet another is his motherboard may be old, providing only ATA33 or worse
speed for ATAPI devices.
One he doesn't have but many eventually will is the shift from PATA to
SATA, which causes at least one OS to make the one device type
masquerade as another type (SATA -> SCSI), confusing configuration and
users in the process.
