Jane Kelley On (08 Dec 96) was overheard to say to Regina Finan
JK> I have been studying alcoholism and addiction with related problems
JK> for well over 25 years now, and I think that I have a much better
JK> handle on what is going on in this field than you do.
Well Jane .. the content of your post would seem to indicate
otherwise .. or at least that you are misinterpreting what you are
reading .. maybe a mentor to help you understand better is in order?
JK> If you get the home page for the National Alliance of the Mentally
JK> Ill, or NAMI at www.nami.org you will find that the neurotransmitter,
JK> glutamate, has just been found linked to the underlying pathology in
JK> this disease.
Not even a good try Jane.
The NAMI reference, as you well know, has absolutely NOTHING to do
with ADD or ADHD or any kind of addiction. It does refer to the
pathology of schizophrenia. It does say that a Donald Goff and
colleagues at Mass Gen Hosp have "demonstrated" that the agent
d-cycloserine acting at the nerve-cell receptor site for glutamate
improves negative symptoms and cognitive functioning in SCHIZOPHRENIA
when added to conventional antipsychotic agents. <--that means, gasp,
drugs Jane, DRUGS used in the treatment of schizophrenia. Not herbs,
potions, or any other witches brew. Oh yes lets not forget that
these folks are going to institute extended clinical trials to attempt
to prove their hypothesis.
Come on Jane got to do better than that. But at least, for a change,
you did give, if not chapter and verse, at least the right aisle.
The NAMI home page, for any who are interested in looking for
themselves has a site search feature that works pretty well which is
how I found the one and only reference in all the NAMI site to
glutamate - and only a brief 6 lines at that.
