My theory is that with the egr disabled, the engine did not get choked down
on its own exhaust. Rather than a diluted mixture, it was only running on a
fresh intake charge. 
If it makes a difference, the egr system in question is the old single
diaphram type that was ON most of the time.  No temperature lockouts, no
signal delay cans, just straight fed ported vacuum signal.
