To him, he was risking his good name and reputation.  Its not the value you
put on his good name that counts, its the value HE puts on his good name
that counts.  Trump prior to his bankruptcy had carefully cultivated a
public persona as an excellent almost unequaled businessman (at least in
his mind).  He had PR people, Oprah appearances the whole bit to cultivate
this. Supposedly wrote books on the "Art of the Deal", etc.   To
file bankruptcy
had to be a huge blow to his ego worth many millions of dollars to avoid,
if he could.
