I'm not necessarily saying that other disability groups do not
deserve better benefits, but that they have to make their own
cases for them. It is not our place as an organization to argue
the cases of other disability groups. We have enough problems
and few resources enough to deal with our own needs.
The very fact that we have better benefits is because we worked
for them. And while a lot of people are objecting to the cost of
such programs, remember that if the earnings test were
eliminated, it would encourage more people to go into the work
force and thereby pay more into the S.S.A. system.
I could never have taken a job as an all night D.J. had I not been
getting my S.S.D.I. benefits. My taxi bill, which is the only
form of transportation available for that time of night at the
particular location I worked at, came to over $500.00 a month. I
could never have paid that on a salary of $7.00 an hour.
And you want rehab or the employer to pay those costs? I don't
think so. Employers have voiced the cost objection numerous
times and we have for the most part been able to beat it back.
Rehab is an inefficient bureaucracy as it is. You want them to
take on more when it has failed so miserably as it is? We would
never get meaningful work if either were the case.
