There are places where knives are really handy.  Kids should not have knives 
in school except in art and biology classes where they need them.
In our Cub Scouting program, we teach the proper use of a pocket knife.  The 
boys are given safety instructions and practice on pieces of soap.  If 
sucessful, they earn a "Whittling Chip" card which allows them to carry and 
use knives at scout meetings and events.  The boys need to use knives to 
shape their Pinewood Derby Cars and many other projects in scouting.
