subject: Win95 under os/2 ???

It's 01 Mar 97 00:15:06,
We'll return to Stephane Bessette and Stephen Haffly's
discussion of Win95 under os/2 ???
SB> that I 'complete the hows', and so I hope I did. If you were only
SB> wondering about how to reactivate boot manager, then you only need to
SB> use fdisk and activate the partition. You could do it from Win95, or
SB> use the two OS/2 installation floppies, and exit the installation. At
 SB> the prompt, type fdisk.
That's the impression I was under too. A simple 'fdisk -> set active
partition should do the trick. :-) Then put Win 95 under the boot menu.
:-)
SB> Also, I've since installed Win95 on my own computer; I'm
SB> tired of friends calling me about their Win95 problems and me having to
SB> learn Win95 'over the phone', by asking them questions. I've installed
SB> it, looked at it, and I must admit that I'm disappointed. I had heard
SB> a lot of hype, and a lot of comments about how user friendly it was,
SB> how you could do so many things with it. But my initial though on it
SB> was: "What, this is all that there is?" I couldn't believe it. I
SB> always believed that Win95 could compete against OS/2, and now I see
SB> for myself that it just isn't so.

For me, the reasons for running OS/2 are more technical. I need things
like virtual com ports and virtual DOS machines. These are sadly absent
in Win 95. :-( In addition, the number of processes running here at any
given time is close to 10 (inetd, 2 telnet BBS nodes, GIGO gateway and
NNTP client, this editor session, often a couple of Win-OS/2 apps, and 2
copies of OS2EXECD, so DOS sessions can start OS/2 apps. :-) ).
Win 95 simply doesn't offer these facilities. :-( Unfortunately, it
won't be long before I have to seriously consider running it. If that
happens, it will be on a separate machine...
SB> I've been using OS/2 for 2 years now, and I find it difficult
SB> to use an OS that works against me. I need templates. I need shadows.
SB> I need to be able to drag and drop objects. I need superior
SB> multitasking: I rarely have less than 4 programs running. I need
 SB> OS/2.
Same here. :-) (did you look at the list of apps running most of the
time above? :-) ).
... My Information Superhighway has potholes in it!
