You are close to the correct answer, but "native" is not quite correct. TAPI
"Telephony Application Interface" programmes look at Win95 for modem support.
Even then, it would not be quite correct to refer to "drivers" in the
traditional sense, rather "information files" (*.inf, simple text files).
But some native programmes, like the great ZOC (for Win95), can stand on
their own feet without TAPI support. ZOC allows the user to enter modem
information directly, e.g. init string, baud rate, flow control/hand shaking,
etc., whereas TAPI programmes (Hyperterminal being one example) rely on Win95
for all of this information.
