The triumphalism is striking enough on its own -- but what's even weirder
is the way it coexists with PHGS (Pitiful, Helpless Giant Syndrome). That
was Nixon's phrase in 1970 -- if we didn't send our troops into Cambodia, 
we would be (or be seen as) a PHG. Lordy, remember that surge of respect
worldwide when our forces stormed that huge underground COSVN complex? I'm
not sure they got all the WMDs, but it was worth it anyway to liberate the
Cambodians.

Then it was the Reaganauts rescuing us from domination by Grenada, Libya,
Sandinistas, and America-haters at the UN. Tied down like Gulliver, we
needed to forget Vietnam, flex our muscles and stand tall, 'cause it was
morning again. Except for the morning in 1983 the Marine barracks in Beirut
was bombed, and the Secret Liberal Wimp Cabal forced Big Ron to pull our
troops out in a hurry.

Now it's voices around here worrying about the world's impotent whiners
stuffing dynamite and Kyoto protocols and international criminal courts
into our orifices -- except when the same voices are pre-justifying
Operation Clear, Present, and All-But-Imminent Desert Rhetoric Phase 3. (Is
that "on to Riyadh," "on to Tehran," or "on to
Pyongyang"? I forget.)

I can deal with someone who believes "We're the biggest, baddest mofo
on the global block, we intend to stay that way, and you foreigners better
learn to live with it."

And I can deal with someone who believes "We're beset by terrorism...
outvoted at the UN... betrayed by our so-called allies except for Tony
Blair (who won't even shut Phil up)... an island of Christianity in a sea
of Islamocommiesocialdemocratic fanatics who are just waiting for Hillary
Clinton to raise her 'Death to America' banner."

It's those who seem to believe BOTH who weird me out.
