From: "Gary Britt"
The reference you cite below is meaningless to the discussion of what is a
"small business".
You cite a list that is developed solely by the "TAXERS", the
taxers think ANYONE with a JOB is RICH. The list is also produced by and
only relevant to the arbitrary and artificial categories set up by the
Small Business Administration for purposes of doling out its funds pursuant
to statute, it is prepared without relation to reality or any other real
world source. It is wholly a creation of the government for the
government's purposes.
A REAL WORLD look shows, Large Business is the Fortune 500. Everyone would
agree on that:
"Fortune 500 companies are among the biggest, most profitable, and
most powerful companies in America. We're talking serious blue-chips with
vast holdings, like Exxon Mobil (ranked #1 on the Fortune 500 for 2001),
General Electric (#5), and Philip Morris (#10). Talk about profits -- the
top company on the list made over $210 billion in revenues! But even the
bottom end of the Fortune 500 list isn't too shabby. Newspaper conglomerate
Knight-Ridder (ranked #499) and wireless technology company Qualcomm (#500)
pulled in over $3 billion each. "
So Qualcomm # 500 on the 2001 list has gross sales of $3 Billion dollars.
To say that medium sized businesses start at a puny $500 Million may be too
low. There are thousands and thousands of US companies in the $500 Million
and up range. Almost every small town in America with a population in
excess of around 30,000 to 50,000 will have one or more family owned small
business with gross sales or net asset value in excess of $10 Million
probably one or two in excess of $100 Million. Large business enterprises
start at NO LESS than $1 Billion in gross revenues.
To recap, Small business up to around $500 Million. Medium sized business
from $500 Million to $1 Billion. That's about how the big accounting firms
break things out for their services as well. But they live in the REAL
WORLD. Not in the PRETEND world of government and liberals.
Cheers,
Gary
