Actually, you're right - I should have looked at VESA modes before I
said that. Nearly every SVGA card will allow you to set its extended
modes simply by supplying different mode numbers to int 10/function 0.
However, the same basic principle applies: a number that works for one
card won't work for another, and/or may set an entirely different mode
on another.
One excercise that can be interesting is to simply loop through all
possible mode values to see what each produces. Some cards seem to
support a few modes they don't document...
