My view is that we need to treat it a little more like radioactivity.

Infection is an either/or event - it happens or it doesn't.  There's no
gradual effect, like with lead or mercury poisoning.  If it's in your diet,
there's a chance it will infect.  Or not.

You've either got (invariably fatal) vCJD or you haven't.  With gradual
poisons, removing the source at minimum halts the progress of the
poisoning.
