HP Deskjets keep track of the serial # of the cartridge

be defeated
by taping over a contact on the cartridge and reinserting it.
Newer models keep track of a maximum of two cart s/n's, so cycling
a refilled third one in makes the first one re-usable. IOW you
need a total of three to never have to buy an over priced
new one.
Go to www.refillinstructions.com for exhaustive
details on HP and other printers. Even the Epson units
with a chip in the cart can be reset with a device which
you can purchase.
