Most rifle bullets, regardless of caliber or power, with defeat most 
vests.  There is a photo somewhere published of a 30-06 180gr 
'soft-point' bullet fired at close range going through a 3/4" plate of 
high carbon steel.
Ironically, this is part of what promted a move to ban all expanding
ammo, even for hunting.  Lost on these folks is the fact that FMJ is even 
more penetrating.
