The first public reference to Mr. Magoo I remember hearing was in the 1975
banquet address delivered in Chicago at the Palmerhouse Hotel by Dr. Jernigan
called, "Blindness is the public against us." It is available on our web
sight http://www.nfb.org at link 22. That was my first national convention
and I remember being there listening to that speech and wondering why we are
making such an issue of a cartune character. The current version will
probably be no different.
And speaking of banquet speeches, I noticed that our sight has every banquet
address from the most recent one through 1975's speech with one exception,
the 1978 address given by Ralph Sanders in Baltimore who was president for
one year between 1977 and 78. Regardless of what he may have done later on
he was still president for that time and deserves the credit and recognition
for that. We don't throw out the Nixon presidency just because he resigned
in disgrace. He was still president of the United States for those 5 and 1/2
years whether we liked or voted for him or not. We don't negate O. J.
Simson's or Pete Rose's accomplishments on the athletic field just because of
what they did after the fact. And in our own movement, we also don't disgard
our own John Taylor, Perry Sunquist or Russell Klutzing presidencies just
because they were contriversial. Ralph Sanders should be treated no
differently. we have never had better Public Relations than we did when he
was affiliated with our organization and as I said, no matter what he may
have done afterwards, he still deserves his due.
btw, I did not find that article about Social Security, Emphasis on vendors.
