It is my understanding that many (most? all?) PCI motherboards share 
IRQs between slots and also even with on-board devices such as COM ports 
and USB controllers.

Some cards share IRQs better than others. I had to do a lot of juggling 
of SCSI card (LSILogic chip), NIC and sound card before I found an 
arrangement that worked.

And I have still neveer been able to use the second channel on that SCSI 
card in OS/2 / eCS. LSILogic told me that it's a motherboard BIOS 
problem that Asus/Award wasn't interested in fixing.
