Not very close to any big city, but several within a few hours drive.
Look for Sudbury in the Province of Ontario. It is on the northeastern
side of Georgian Bay.

I have seen this pattern before. We had an early very cold autumn a
few years back, followed by a mild winter. (Followed by a wet cold
spring, etc.). But mild is a word of many colours. Our heating bills
went UP because wind accompanied the mild, and wind gobbles up heat.
