On or about 24 Dec 97 12:14:55, Nick Blundell did utter
Hi-Fi Stereo VCRs to James Bradley.
   Greetings Nick

JB> I use an old Sony that uses a potentiometer to adjust the input volume
NB> That is handy, I haven't got anyway of controlling the input level to
NB> either of my VCR's, I usually use a preamp with a level meter and
NB> control for sorting this out, You can get a very high signal without
 NB> distortion!
You bet you can.
JB> What's the deal with this NICAM?
NB> NICAM is used in the United Kingdom, It is a Digital audio signal
NB> qhich is transmitted along with the Video signal, So TV sound here is
 NB> CD quality!
That sounds like an ideal dynamic process. On playback, it does decode the
signal doesn't it? In other words, it is not a single ended process?
JB> This Sony has a better S/N ratio than any 44.1K, 16 bit recording! No
 JB> slouch in many respects.
I'll soften this claim in hindsight. (See a previous note in this thread from
me.) I'm quite positive (can't make it to the manual at this time) the Sony
does better than 90db A-weighted. I could be off a touch though. It is quite
a few years old, so I'll blame the age of the noggin I'm using to store the
info.
NB> Must admit that when you turn the volume up when you come to a blank
NB> bit you have to turn it up high before you can here any noise!!, the
NB> minute the audio comes back then there is no chance in hearing noise!!
I'll just bet that it doesn't suffer from the usual artifacts that limit
traditional compression/decompression schemes.
NB> Cheers & Merry Christmas from Nick.
