subject: IBM and Itanium

CA>Was reading that IBM is dicontinuing it's optimization of Linux
CA>to use the new Itanium chip from Intel.

CA>Why?

CA>IBM said they realized that Intel/HP were _forced_ to continue
CA>optimization of Linux for the Itanium so why should IBM bother?
CA>Being 'opensourced' they will just grab up what Intel/HP come
CA>up with and run with that. Meanwhile it frees up their people
CA>to work optimizing Linux for _their_ next chip.

CA>I normally could care less if one corp beats another corp to a
CA>bloody pulp but this really left a bad taste in my mouth.

We shouldn't be too surprized that IBM has dropped developement
of a OS (like OS2 8-( again.

CA>It annoys me to no end that RedHat has created millionaires
CA>that didn't have to even write or pay for what they are
CA>selling, then the 'Lindows' scam, and now this.

CA>Am I the only one that sees this whole opensource thing as
CA>having a negative side to it that is growing faster than the
CA>positive side? So-called opensource is rapidly becoming an
CA>unpaid source of revenue for the already rich.

You aren't alone by any means. I find it interesting that
many linuxers often tend to be socialistic academics who
often decry that competition is a quite normal attribute
of our living condition; that also generally has a more
positive than negative influence on our total well being.
(My daughter often cites this ratiocination as my unqualified
acceptence of Darwin's postulations)

BTW The recent announced bankrupcy of Mandrake, and other
linux concerns, demonstrates that the precepts of the
real world are in full command in the opensoucre world.

But none of the oddities will deter my trying some
more distributions (until they get it right 8-)

Ciao, Ack.
