Hi, well chances are good that your problem is slugs. The best
way to find out is to go out after dark with a flashlight and
look. They hide during the day and come out after dark to feed.
About an hour after dark is a good time. They should be up on
the leaves then and you can see what's eating your hosta. They
will climb up taller plants too. I've found them way up on my
tomatoes. Actually the best way to get rid of them is to
handpick them. I just drop them into a container with soapy
water and they don't climb out of that, they die. After a few
nights you will have pretty well controlled your slug problem.
If you don't relish the idea of handpicking them I've heard that
beer traps work well too. Snails and slugs seem to be worse
during rainy weather.
