subject: Fido`s future

Hi, Felipe!

13 Dec 02 21:18, Felipe T. Dorado said to Alex Shakhaylo:

MV>>>> but if that is also the future of FidoNet, I am not so sure
 MV>>>> about.

 FD>>> Nor am I.

 AS>> I am. does it count ?

FD> You bet it does :)

I hope :)

AS>> If you track nodelist for a year or two you'll see that the
 AS>> number of
AS>> ip nodes increases and the number of POTS ones decreases. For me
AS>> it is clear sign about the fidonet future (if any).

FD> Too simplistic a statistic, don't you think? There are many factors
 FD> involved.

Yes, but I don't try to analize the reasons, I just see the trend.

FD> Allow me to forget about the "if any" };)

As the thoughtful people we cannot forget about any possibility :-)

FD> Fido is more than a mail network, it is a means of communicating.
FD> Just as an internet or the phone, or radio, or newspapers are.

Agreed, and all the listed are developing to keep actuality. For example
phone technology switches from the copper lines to optic, to radio, from
the analog to digital and so on. It doesn't matter the way information
comes to your receiver (messageeditor in case of the fidonet).

FD> Ok, an inet is the future. Yes, it is. I said that above and that's
FD> what I believe now and what I believed when I bought my first modem,
FD> precisely because it _was_ the future.

FD> Now, when will that future be present? For how many countries and how
FD> many people will it be present? In two years?

It is coming now. Well, I can't predict when internet will get distribu-
tion equal to phone distribution, but why we should wait ? What will we
gain by waiting ?

 FD> Fine, I'll sign for
FD> that and forget POTS. But this Inet was already the future back in
FD> '96, and in some countries it was the future as far back as '92 or
FD> even earlier. So, 10 years have gone by and ... how many people do
FD> actually have an IP conection which can be used for Fidonet also?
FD> They're not as many as was forseen/promised, are they?

They are numerous enough to form the trend, though.

FD> So, until that future comes, and I repeat I think it will come,
FD> what's wrong with using pots? What's wrong with keeping the
FD> promotion of pots and BBSs?

Nothing wrong with it. The wrong begins when people resist ip.

FD> And if one is not for actually promoting
FD> them, at least leave them alone and stop saying that they are dead.
FD> My 486 with NWDos is not dead, it works. Not only they are not dead
FD> but there are much more people on the planet who would be greatful if
FD> they had Fido mail, or any kind of e-mail, than the ones who consider
FD> pots obsolete because they've had IP for years.

You've go me wrong, I'm afraid. I have nothing against PSTN, I'm just
saying the IP is of the same importance to the fidonet means of communi-
cating as PSTN is.

FD> The planet is larger than we think. Even though we've grown since we
 FD> were little.

So do you think we should wait until leased line will be in every
department and then we should switch the technology all at once ? :-)

Bye, Sinc, Alex
