There has been some discussion on opening a file as "read-only"
My "solution" is to rename such a file with the [default] Alt-O
command immediately after opening it. This protects the original
file from any change, allows editing of the new filename [if that
should be propitious], and runs the [perhaps] risk of saving a
junk file somewhere. But it does seem to protect the original
file from damage.
If you want to remember what the file was you have opened as
read-only, use some sort of standard "code" such as replacing the
last letter of the filename or extension with a tilde or other
easily recognizable character.
