There's a good reason why some of us are conservatives. I lost a bird a
number of years ago to surgical sexing because the instrument accidently
poked a hole through one of the bird's vital organs while positioning the
instrument for sexing. Funny thing is they sewed the bird up and handed it
over to me without ever saying a word. Not so funny that the bird started
leaking and died a very painful death shortly thereafter.
Surgical sexing is an EXTREME measure. It's an invasive measure. In all but
the most experienced hands (and you won't find that at a university teaching
school, I promise.... as you have recommended to Tom) the bird is in danger.
At the very least, as you said, air sacs become infected. But they have to be
treated or secondary problems become evident.
Are YOU offering a replacement bird if Tom's bird dies on the table? No such
replacement would be necessary if the bird is DNA sexed.
