MH> I also suffer with numbness in my hands (I am a novice rider). I was
MH> considering raising the height of my handle bars to shift my center of
MH> gravity to put more weight on my butt, rather than my hands.
LL> You didn't mention if you are riding a road bike or a mountain bike.
LL> On my road bike, I'm working towards lowering my handlebars for
LL> a more aerodynamic riding position. I don't recall ever having
LL> hand numbness on my mountain bike but the longest ride that I've
LL> ever done on it was about 62 miles.
Wello, when you get to be my age, have Diabetes, Osteo Arthritis,
and a few other things, you have a modicum of nerve damage to the
extremities, etc; you wind up with rather severe pain and cramping
of the Hand, Arms, and Shoulder muscles. I replaced the Flat
Handle Bar with as High Rise a bar as I could find. I still am
having to lean forward and put the weight on my hands and arms.
I suppose that an alternative would be to lower the Seat Post.
Then I would be peddling with my old Arthritic knees up in the air
like some of these recumbant cyclists. Not sure my old worn out legs
could handle this. I usually rub Flexall 454 into my joints before
I go out and take a couple of Extra Strength Tylenol and still, I
find that it is a real chore to ride more than just a few miles.
Of course, the terrain here is either Up or Down. No Flat ground
to speak of. I spend an awful lot of time down in 1st or 2nd
notch of the 1st speed. You guys better thank your stars that
you don't have the problems that some of us old fogeys have to
put up with. In two weeks I'll be 69 and I still keep trying.
