NASA funds some of the nuttiest ideas in an attempt to explore all
possibilities. But what people don't realize is that while private space
ship one or whatever it was called was promoted as having made it into
space, they didn't even address the most basic problem of re-entry. That's
where things get a bit tougher, those last few miles up and back down. As
long as you stay in the air it's just flying, and while private industry
has built rockets to put things in orbit, they have yet to address
re-entry. (note industry does use rockets to put things in orbit)

NASA's problem is not ideas, they have plenty of ideas and the know how to
use them. NASA's big problem is they have too much overhead and are not
being pushed so they move at a snails pace. Perhaps china and russia will
change that last part now.
