Hello Jim -

CA>>> MSD.EXE that is incl with W31 installs should work.

JH>> Yes, and it also came with DOS 6.x and on the CDROM Disc
JH>> of Win9x.

CA>> I knew Wayne had W31 installed, I did not know what
CA>> version of DOS he is/was using and AFAIK he had no working
CA>> W9x install as yet.

JH> Same here. I remember him mentioning DOS 5 a time or two,
JH> and pointed to the Win9x disc since I knew he had that, and
JH> thought a newer version of MSD might be missing some of the
JH> earlier bugs.

I don't really know. I don't use MSD often. I use DIAG445
lately.

JH> Since then, I saw somewhere at USRobotics website that
JH> 16450 UARTS aren't properly recognized by software, and
JH> report back as 8250's. Maybe versions of MSD coming with
JH> later versions of Win9x have fixed this? I dunno, but would
JH> like to hear from someone about that.

Sounds vaguely familiar but I don't recall what the 'fix' was
if there was one.

JH>> Another way to find out, if running Win9x, go to Control
JH>> Panel, click on Modems, then Diagnostics. The display
JH>> lists all COM ports, not just the ones with a Modem. Then
JH>> you can highlight each COM Port, and click on "More Info",
JH>> and it shows the UART type associated with each port.

CA>> (see above)

JH> Yeah. Back at that time, I knew he hadn't yet installed
JH> Win9x, so I just added that for future reference, or in
JH> case someone else out there wanted to find out what their
JH> UARTS were, but couldn't find MSD.EXE - - looks to me like
JH> Win98 and perhaps earlier didn't bother to put that program
JH> on the HDD when installing themselves.

In one of my messages I mentioned that DIAG445 is linked at my
website along with CTBIOS.EXE, CDETECT.COM, and SysoftSandra
for the W9x users.
