Yes, dropping a weapon is not uncommon in LE.The only thing I have found more 
frigyening is having to make a plainclothes apprehension with in an area 
where you are not known to the "locals" and no readily noticeable means of 
identification is visible.  When locals are ss revolver mandated anyone with 
a black weapon is approached differently.  We have to rely on training, 
demeanor, and a quick and belivable presence to be convincing enough  to pass 
muster until positive id is accomplished.
