-- This was in a message from Steven Van Impe to Josh Ryman --
SVI> JR> They say that "it doesn't have to be from the 70's to be a
SVI> JR> classic"
SVI>
SVI> That's true, look at Alan Parsons. Mostly 80's, and still some
SVI> classics. It even doesn't have to be classic to be progrock, I
SVI> think.
Yeah, BUT...some of the stuff they're passing off as 'classic' is really just
machine-processed pop rock. But, I guess I can't win.
SVI>
SVI> I'm young too. Age doesn't matter, my father likes more modern
SVI> music than I do! It is what you feel when you listen that
SVI> matters. When I listen to Dark Side OfThe Moon, I feel so much
SVI> more than when I listen to Osborne. Still, Osborne can be good,
SVI> too. But it's a different style of music. You can't always say
SVI> if something is Progrock. Or even Rock'n'roll. But that doesn't
SVI> mean it's bad. It's a different style. And perhaps it is true
SVI> that modern groups don't make music like 'old' groups used to,
SVI> but take a look at the survivors: Pink Floyd, for example. The
SVI> music they make nowadays is hugely different from what they made
SVI> in the early 70's. Still, I think it's good. And perhaps even
SVI> Progrock. It's not that modern groups aren't the same, it's that
SVI> the TIMES are no longer what the seventies were. (What am I
SVI> talking about, I wasn't even THERE in the early seventies. I
SVI> guess the music helped me get the atmosphere).
Yes, even the great Progrock bands from the 70s have evolved, but they still
sound good! That's what separates 'em from these cheeseball groups the radio
stations try to push off on us...Prog has a sense of permanance and
endurance...
SVI> New Age music is also an abused label: Vangelis and Jarre are
SVI> often described as New Age, while they certainly are NOT.
I wouldn't know, exactly, because I don't peruse the New Age section...I do
kinda like Yanni, though.
SVI> Yes, but you see: some people DID forget Roundabout. And some
SVI> people will remember Alanis Morissette for twenty, thirty years.
SVI> It's all a matter of personal opinion. Progrock isn't better or
SVI> worse than any other music style. It's special to US, but not to
SVI> other people. Everything is relative.
Everything is relative? That's MY catchphrase!
Everyone has his or her own tastes, tis true...some have better taste than
others, though.
