Ran into a problem training today that surprised me and caused me great
concern. For over 8 years I have been handling a very gentle male GSD
who has never physically challenged my authority. Six weeks ago, I
picked up a 10 mo. old Norweigan Elkhound Shep x. Since that time I
have had the new pup, Rascal, neutered and have generally allowed him to
become accustomed to my home and my GSD Victor. For the first time,
today, I took Rascal with to training, not to start so much as to
introduce him to the rest of the dogs and introduce him to simple
agility equipment. While grooming him, he took my hand in his mouth but
did not bite down. When I corrected him for this he retaliated with
full mouth, full strength bites (only minor injury to me). I tried an
alpha roll, but the behavior continued to the point that the only option
I had was to string the poor thing up. When we were finished with this
"discussion" he had submitted. I have never handled a dog that behaved
like this before and I am concerned. He appears to learn in all other
areas very quickly (it took less than 2 days to house break this dog).
I don't know his history prior to having purchased him from the humane
society. I see a great deal of drive and intelligence in this dog, and
don't want to give up yet. We are to start into obedience class in two
weeks. Any suggestions?????
